X-Ray

On those dark winter nights,
Comfortable within the cosy confines
Of the space within my mosquito net, with
A warm hot water bag below my heels,
And a cat purring near my chest,
And the quilt covering my face,
I often shone the torch-light through my hands
To melt into the red glow;
I often ran it through my fingers,
And marvelled at the red flesh fed
By the darkish veins.
My body had none of the ghastliness
Seen on the X-ray plate.
So beautiful, so warm, so filled with
Love and Mirth are we inside.
